Tan Cang – Hiep Phuoc Terminal receives biggest container vessel in HCMC port

On June 22nd, 2016, at Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal, Saigon Newport Corporation and Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc JSC held ceremony to receive m/v Dignity, a ZIM’s 54,255 DWT container vessel. This is a big event of Tan Cang – Hiep Phuoc terminal in particular and HCMC’s ports in general because Dignity is the biggest container vessel in term of container capacity to call at HCMC Port so far.

Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal is one of the major container terminals in the seaport system of SNP, the terminal was put into operation in Dec 2014 and officially inaugurated on May 19th, 2015. Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal has 420m of berth length, 253m of barge wharf and can accommodate fully loaded 50,000 DWT vessels. So far, Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc has always been crowded with over 10 vessels per week and become an important link in the system of Saigon Newport ports, the terminal effectively connects with Tan Cang - Cat Lai terminal, Tan Cang - Phu Huu terminal, Tan Cang - Cai Mep terminals and the terminals in Mekong Delta. Especially, Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc is also an ideal destination for customers to stuff cargoes at yard thank to its barge berth, dedicated equipments, professional stevedore and availability of big carriers’ empty containers.

M/v Dignity is a modern container vessel of ZIM lines – 16th biggest container carriers worlwide - which operates on Asia - West Africa route. With a capacity of 4,400 TEU, Dignity is the biggest ever container vessel calling at HCMC Ports. This event is not only a milestone in vessel operation but also marks the rise of an important gateway terminal in HCMC which enable rising trade with key markets in the region and the world.

To ensure absolute safety for m/v Dignity to call at Tan Cang – Hiep Phuoc, Saigon Newport Corporation has cooperated closely with the Maritime Administration of HCMC and arranged two senior pilots to guide the ship, two canoes to clear the channel and two modern Azimuth tugboats to support Dignity berthing and unberthing the terminal. M/v Dignity safely berthed, handled over 700 containers and departed in the morning of June 23 on schedule.



This event also marked the first time Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal receiving over 50,000 DWT vessel, proving the role of HCMC port system as the heart of import-export hub for the southern key economic area. It is also evidence of Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal and SNP remarkable abilities in the development and integration period, and reflects a right decision of dredging Soai Rap river to accommodate big vessels into HCMC ports.

In order to further exploit the potential benefit of Soai Rap River, SNP is working closely with carriers to develop sound policies to attract shipping lines coming to Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal as well as working with authorities to create favorable conditions for shippers to deliver and receive cargos at Tan Cang - Hiep Phuoc terminal.
